Unions representing faculty and staff at the Institute of Journalism of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC-IJ) have expressed deep concern over the sudden termination of the health care contract with the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). The move, orchestrated by Management, has ignited discontent among the workforce, leading to a collective response from the Unions.

In a statement released on February 2, 2024, UTAG, GAUA, SSA, and TEWUG expressed disappointment in Management's unilateral decision to cancel the healthcare contract. The lack of prior engagement with the Unions has left many employees financially unprepared to handle their medical expenses.

The Unions have issued a request for Management to reconsider its decision by February 7, 2024, and to allow a two-month grace period until March 31, 2024. This period aims to provide staff with the opportunity to prepare financially for impending medical bills and facilitate a smooth transition to alternative healthcare facilities.

In addition to urging Management to engage in transparent dialogue, the Unions are calling for the exploration of a cost-effective and convenient alternative medical care arrangement during this transitional period. Failure to address these concerns promptly, the statement warns, may result in varied forms of industrial action from all staff members.

The Unions emphasize the need for a swift resolution that prioritizes the health and well-being of UniMAC-IJ staff. They call upon Management to consider the best interests of all parties involved and engage in constructive discussions to address the workforce's concerns. Meanwhile, as the deadline approaches, tensions within the UniMAC-IJ community escalate. Staff members eagerly await Management's response, hopeful for a resolution that restores confidence and ensures their continued well-being.
