Support of a new voter’s register and matters arising

The leadership of Power Unity Party (PUP) wishes to officially endorse the decision taken by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, to compile a new voter register for the 2020 general elections.

As a newly registered political party in Ghana, we wish to convey a simple message to the Ghanaian electorate and that is; the electoral commission is capable, have the requisite human resource and experience to carry out such a constitutional mandate with ease.

PUP believes that, the unnecessary interjections by some sister political parties are uncalled for, baseless and has no merit. Compilation of a new voter register will further enhance the credibility of the system as well as expose any discrepancies associated with the old system.

Technology evolves with time and with time, technological systems becomes obsolete. This is one of the major reasons why the voter register needs to be upgraded so as to meet the demands of time.

Our electioneering machinery is run on technology and such technologies with time becomes outmoded and unreliable, hence a new voters register compilation.
At least, rulings from the Apex Court during the election petition in 2016, gave a landmark verdict. The verdict was simple and that, elections are won at the polling stations so if there should be any form of rigging, it would occur at the polling station respectively. This is why all parties should be vigilant to ensure the votes declared are a true reflection of what was really counted.

We therefore urge all political parties to be guided by such a basic principle.

One may ask, what at all is in the new voter’s register that some political parties are so scared off? Instead, they should be rest assured that the mandate belongs to the people and not the parties.

Finally, we recently heard of a reckless statement by Major Boakye Djan, a well-known coup plotter, who had the gut to declare a civil war if the EC dares compile a new voter’s register.

We are sending a clear signal to him (Boakye Djan) that the law is no respecter of persons and should he dare, we of the PUP will ensure that such a rogue is arrested by the police and made to face the full rigorous of the law. He should also note that, he has no relevance as far as democratic rule is concern in Ghana.

At his age, we expect him to give a good account of himself. The legacy of Boakye Djan is that, he was a one-time coup plotter. It is only a toothless bulldog who barks and cant bite and so his Boakye Djan.
The era of military rule is over and he should recognize that. We are calling on the Inspector General of Police and the criminal investigation department (CID), to arrest him for immediate interrogation.

Fellow Ghanaians, lets rally behind the Electoral Commission for the constitution gives them the full mandate to organize and conduct any form of elections in Ghana.
