Story Of ?Blackmail And Extortion In Kosovo?

I have read the news item on the Ghana Home Page website accusing the Inspector-General of Police, the Minister for the Interior and unnamed ?top government officials? of extorting money from officers of the Ghana Police Service on peace-keeping duties in KOSOVO. The news item has been used by local media.

The Police Administration has been quick to respond with a full statement dated 6th January 2003, which denies the allegation. Even though the allegation has been denied by the Police Administration, the matter calls for a thorough investigation to ascertain the real source of the story and whether it is true or false.

I have accordingly directed that such an investigation should be carried out immediately. Meanwhile, the Police Council will at it meeting this month consider the matters raised in the news item and the outcome of the investigations and recommend appropriate action to be taken
