Royal Foam Ghana Limited, in collaboration with health experts, has underscored the crucial role quality sleep plays in maintaining physical and mental well-being, emphasizing that poor sleep habits can lead to serious health complications.
Speaking at the Royal Wow Promo Market Awareness, Dr. Richard Korsah, a medical practitioner at Jaggreys Fertility and Medical Services, described sleep as “an essential human function, just like breathing and eating,” noting that the body undergoes critical restorative processes during rest.
“When you sleep, your body is still, but your brain remains active. It carries out vital processes that promote healing, emotional balance, and mental restoration,” Dr. Korsah explained.
He noted that most adults require seven to nine hours of sleep each night to function effectively, while children and teenagers need even more rest due to their ongoing physical and mental development.
Dr. Korsah further explained that the human body operates on a circadian rhythm—an internal biological clock that regulates sleep and wake cycles.
“When this system is disrupted by factors such as shift work or jet lag, it can lead to sleep disturbances and long-term health problems,” he added.
He warned that inadequate sleep can impair concentration, mood, and decision-making, often resulting in irritability and reduced productivity.
“Lack of proper rest can slow your reaction time, putting you at risk while driving or operating machinery,” he said.
“In the long term, sleep deprivation increases the risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and depression.”
Addressing the unique challenges faced by shift workers, Dr. Korsah advised them to prioritize rest by maintaining consistent sleep schedules and creating a calm, dark environment conducive to daytime sleep.
He also cautioned against the use of stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine before bedtime, and recommended minimizing distractions from phones and bright lights.
Highlighting the importance of sleep environment, Dr. Korsah stressed that a good mattress is vital for spinal support and proper rest.
“If your mattress sags, creaks, or causes stiffness, it’s time to replace it,” he advised. “Sleeping on the wrong mattress can lead to back and neck pain, fatigue, and poor sleep quality.”
He added that the right mattress depends on one’s sleeping position back sleepers benefit from firmer mattresses, side sleepers require softer ones to cushion their joints, and combination sleepers should opt for medium-firm options for balanced comfort and support.
Meanwhile, the General Manager of Royal Foam Ghana Limited, Baffour Awuah Assibey, urged Ghanaians to invest in quality mattresses, noting that the right bedding is key to achieving healthy and restorative sleep.
“Good sleep starts with the right mattress. At Royal Foam, we are committed to helping Ghanaians experience better rest through quality and affordable bedding solutions,” he said.
