In recognition of his numerous efforts toward the growth of the energy sector and an open display of commitment toward the country’s energy transition, the 2022 edition of the prestigious Ghana Energy Awards has honored Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Honourable Minister of Energy, with the Exceptional Commitment to Africa's Energy Transition Award.

The event, which took place in Accra Friday, November 25, was under the theme, “Global Decarbonisation: A Just and Equitable Energy Transition in Ghana.”
Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, presented the honorary award, which was received on Dr. Prempeh’s behalf by Dr. Amin Adam, the Deputy Minister of Energy.

A citation in his honor presented at the event read: “You have been unequivocal in your commitment to Ghana's energy transition, shown by the recent outdooring of the National Energy Transition Framework: the result of a painstaking nationwide stakeholder consultative approach, and a framework geared at guiding Ghana's transition to a net-zero economy by 2070 in a just and equitable manner, as well as minimize possible stranded assets and job losses in the oil and gas sector.

“Your consultatory approach has been backed by clear objectives towards the transition to using renewables, epitomized by the development of large-scale solar farms on dam lake surfaces such as the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam, which would be a source of both solar and hydro energy; the implementation of 20-megawatt solar power plants in remote communities; revision of local content legislation; the electrification of island communities and hard-to-reach areas with renewable energy technologies; and the extension of the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program (SREP) to include prioritized projects, such as solar streetlights and off-grid solar power projects for isolated communities.”

It added that the Minister’s passionate resolve to steer Ghana's energy sector towards the path of net zero emissions and the attainment of the nationally determined contributions were clearly expressed at the recently held COP 27 in Egypt, at which event he also expressed the country’s dedication to toward the use of clean fuels.

The restoration of Ghana's Cylinder Manufacturing Company and improvement of the cylinder recirculation model to meet Ghana's clean energy goals were further cited as testament to his efforts; as well as the launch of the National LPG Promotion Programme to accelerate the switch from unclean fuels to LPG to achieve the 50 per cent access goal by 2030.

Additionally, progress is being made toward the adoption of nuclear energy to form part of Ghana's energy mix.

It is in light of these invaluable efforts and show of commitment toward the energy transition in Ghana and Africa, therefore, that the Ghana Energy Awards, organized by the Energy Media Group, in partnership with GP Business Consulting, presented him with the Exceptional Commitment to Africa's Energy Transition Honorary Award.
