Kilimanjaro Chronicles – Day 4: Conquering the kissing wall and beyond

Day 4 of my Kilimanjaro adventure was marked by a daunting challenge that awaited us right from the moment we left Baranco Camp at 9:27 am, local time.

As we departed, the imposing Baranco Wall loomed in front of us, a steep and formidable obstacle that seemed to sap our energy with every step we took.

The climb up the Baranco Wall was wickedly steep, demanding every ounce of strength and determination we had. As we reached the Kissing Wall, we were briefed on how to navigate it safely.

The instructions were clear: we had to embrace the wall, placing our left foot first, maneuvering carefully, and then planting our right leg while gripping onto a piece of rock. I dared not look behind me as I crossed the bridge, for it was razor-sharp and unforgiving. A single misstep could result in serious injury or worse.

Beyond the Kissing Wall, the terrain presented a variety of challenges. We encountered stretches of moorland, desert, and a combination of landscapes, all while contending with less-than-ideal weather that limited our visibility. The elevation changes and descents took a toll on my already fatigued body, leaving me feeling incredibly tired throughout today’s hike.

At last, we arrived at Karanga Hut at 2:07 pm, local time. Although lunch was ready, I had no appetite. All I desired was to rest and rejuvenate. The heavens opened up, and heavy rain poured down, though it wasn’t as bone-chilling as the previous night.

For tonight, I’ve requested that my dinner be brought to my tent. I find myself lacking the motivation to expend any more energy than necessary. All I have left for today and tonight is to answer nature’s call when it beckons.

As I look back on the day’s journey, I’m struck by the awe-inspiring challenges Kilimanjaro continues to present. The Kissing Wall, a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, stood as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and our ability to overcome the most daunting challenges.

Tomorrow, God willing, we’ll tackle Day 5, armed with the lessons of perseverance and the determination to reach the summit. And as a bonus, I’ve included some pictures of the Kissing Wall to share the breathtaking beauty and the audacious challenges of this extraordinary adventure.
