Ghanaian innovators champion tech-driven problem solving culture in Africa

Two Ghanaian innovators are determined to push the frontiers of innovations further forward and make problem solving a fundamental culture in Ghana, Africa and beyond.

They specialize in problem solving in which programming in software development is one of their major instruments of work. They have developed an advanced web application under their company Nationton Information Technology and made the application free for use by organizations and individuals.

Software development, they admit, is a common pursuit but what is special about them as software developers is their identification of problem solving as the major occupation in life and their determination to practice problem solving through software development and other pursuits for the benefit of all.

Meet Osei Yaw Kyei and his brother Isaac Anto Kyei, co-founders of Nationton Information Technology and the developers of Nationton Republic and The FOJ Web Application—a groundbreaking digital platform designed to empower businesses, individuals, and communities through internet technology.

They started this project as a student research initiative called, “Nationton Researching Crew” at the University of Ghana in 2013. Now, it has evolved into a digital multipurpose platform called, “Nationton Republic” that serves as a hub for entrepreneurs, organizations and individuals to use innovative tools to establish their presence on the internet, promote their brands and products, earn income, and reach the global markets.

“Our mission is simple,” they explain, “We want to find practical solutions to the challenges we face in Ghana, Africa and beyond. And the tools we’ve built are a starting point for our contribution to technological solutions and enhancing living experience in this world.”

With no formal training in software development, Osei Yaw taught himself to code. Within three weeks of focusing on software development, he was able to code.

Later, he mentored his brother Isaac to follow suit. Their shared vision of a technology-driven solution led to the birth of Nationton Republic in 2016.
Despite its success, Nationton Republic faces challenges, particularly in raising awareness about the internet's potential in Ghana.

“Many people still do not have adequate understanding of how the technology of the internet can solve problems and transform lives.”

The brothers recognize education as the most effective basic means for problem solving and individual, family, societal and national development. They therefore advocate that educational institutions should be recognized as centres for developing the problem-solving capabilities of people and for training people into problem solvers rather than as institutions for producing job seekers.

Since Nationton Republic was launched, the two brothers indicate that it has made a significant impact on businesses and individuals, entrepreneurs have expanded their reach, affiliates have earned income, and communities have benefited from their innovative tools.

Looking ahead, the brothers have the ambition to expand their platform and form partnerships with organizations to expand their impact across Africa and the rest of the world.
