Young people from various congregations of the Churches of Christ in the Greater Accra Region thronged the campus of Heritage Christian University College, Amasaman-Accra for their Youth Day 2023 which featured a Career Development Conference and Business Fair.

The event was on the theme, “Building Capacity for Growth and Greater Works: Connect, Network and Impact.” The program, organised by the Greater Accra Regional Youth Fellowship (GARYOFEL) of the Churches of Christ, brought together students at all levels of education, artisans, professionals and established entrepreneurs, job seekers among others.

The aim was to provide an avenue for young people to learn and develop their skills and potentials, meet mentors and position the youth for advancement in their chosen fields. It also created an opportunity for small and medium scale enterprises to exhibit their products and services.

The Chairperson of the Greater Accra Regional Youth Fellowship, Dr. Stephen Nkansah Morgan, a Lecturer at the University of Ghana, said the youth need mentoring and exposure to those who are before them so that they too can press towards their goals.

The Honorary Chancellor of Heritage Christian University College, Dr. James Asare-Adjei, who is a former President of the Association of Ghana Industries, was the Keynote Speaker. He shared his life story in setting up Asadtek Group Limited, a major kitchenware and roofing products manufacturing factory, as well as real estate company located in Tema. He recalled that he began the company in 2002 with the equivalent of today’s GHC20. He noted that he had to do a lot of work that was considered too low for a professional engineer like him in order to break through to become a major manufacturer in the country.

The CEO of the Centre for Transformational Leadership Africa, a former General Counsel of the Ecobank Transnational Inc., and the Council Chairman of Heritage Christian University College, Mr. Samuel Kumi Ayim, challenged the youth to look at problems they are confronted with differently and seek pragmatic steps to address their challenges instead of always complaining about what is not right.

The Chairman of the ceremony was Prof. Williams Atuilik, Vice-President and Provost of Heritage Christian University College and a former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana. He commended the leadership of GARYOFEL for putting together the program and connecting young people to mentors. He stated that, despite his poor family background, he was inspired to become a lawyer, chartered accountant, banker and economist by learning from towering figures in those fields and by dint of hardwork, determination and God’s Grace, he had attained all those dreams.

The Greater Accra Regional Youth Fellowship of the Churches of Christ holds various programmes to build the youth of the church to be “United in Faith and Grounded in Love”, as its slogan indicates.
