Wa Central NPP holds congress

Wa, Sept 16, GNA - The Wa Central Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party on Thursday buried its acrimonious past and became the first constituency in the Upper West Region to elect new executives at its delegates congress held at Wa.

The executive, a blend of old and new members, were elected by popular acclamation by chairmen and secretaries of all the 111 polling stations in the constituency who formed the Electoral College. Mallam Abudulai Safana retained his position as Chairman, while Alhaji Osman Yakubu and Alhaji Umar Farouk were also returned to the positions of First Vice-Chairman and Second Vice- Chairman respectively. Mr Mujeeb Rahman became the new Regional Secretary with Mrs. Jamila Issah as her Assistant with the position of Constituency Organizer going to Mr John Donkor.

Miss Amamata Mumuni was elected as the new Women's Organizer while Mr Bashir Malik and Mr Ali Kamara became the new Treasurer and Youth Organizer respectively. The Regional Chairman of the Party, Alhaji Abdulai Issahaque, said it was pure delusion on the part of the NDC to think that it could dislodge the NPP from power in 2008 following its recent two bye-election victories. He said the victories were rather a wake-up call for the NPP to re-strategize to neutralize the propaganda machinery that gave the NDC those victories.

Mr Mac-Adams Banda, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive, said if the unity that was beginning to exist within the rank and file of the party in the constituency was tightened and sustained, there was no way victory could elude the party in the Municipality and the region in general "since what happens in Wa usually reflects in other parts of the region". "With unity prevailing, a sense of purpose and an infusion of resources, the NPP will break the seemingly invincibility of the NDC in the Constituency".

On the economic front, he said every political party was bound to take unpleasant decisions during its first year in office but the situation gradually changed as the years rolled out. Mr Banda announced that with the support of the ministries of Trade and Industries and Agriculture, groundnut cultivation would be undertaken on a massive scale in the region during the next farming season and advised all those who were interested in that venture to begin acquiring land for that purpose.
