Parliament approves report on composition of Sub-Committees

Accra, July 15, GNA - Parliament on Friday approved a report of the House Committee on the composition of Sub-Committees to cater for the welfare of members.

Mr Felix Owusu-Adjapong, Chairman of the House Committee, who moved for the adoption of the report, said the formation of the Sub-Committees was to help the House Committee to perform its functions effectively. The Sub-Committees would provide services to Members of Parliament (MPs) including accommodation, catering, medical care, research and other working facilities.

The Sub-Committees are Welfare and Remuneration; Research and Library; Security and Accommodation, Transport and Catering. Mr Owusu-Adjapong, who is also the Majority Leader, said the Parliament of Ghana would be hosting the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) - African Regional Conference next year.

He said the organisation of such an event fell within the functions of the House Committee and its Sub-Committees and the two had been charged to organise the CPA conference.

Earlier, Mr Sampson Ahi, NDC MP for Juaboso in a statement to the House said the Government should improve upon the infrastructure development in his constituency to afford the people a better standard of living.

He said 90 per cent of the people of Juaboso were cocoa farmers and the area was a major supplier of food and timber, but in spite of the enormous contributions, Juaboso was one of the poorest constituencies in the country.

Mr Ahi said about 70 per cent of the road network were impassable and people were dying through major accidents due to the bad nature of the road. "My constituency has only one secondary school and the facilities are very poor and that there are no hostel blocks to accommodate 1,200 students.

"It is sad to note that communication facilities is a major worry to my people and this discourages teachers and other professionals from accepting posting to Juaboso and it environs," he said. The MP called on the Minister of Communications, Ghana Telecom and cell phone service providers to extend telephone services to cover Juaboso.
