NPP satisfied with level of support in Volta Region

Akatsi, (V/R) Nov. 10, GNA - Mr. Gabriel Awudi, Ave-Avenor Constituency Chairman of the NPP said the party is highly satisfied with the level of support it is currently enjoying in the constituency, in particular and the Volta Region. in general.

He said the overwhelming support, including opinion leaders in the region, formerly regarded as NDC stronghold is a plus for the ruling party in its desire to renew the people's mandate in the 2004 polls for a second term in office.

Mr. Awudi, speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Tuesday at Akatsi, said the people are appreciative of the good works the governing party is pursuing in the region, contrary to perceptions years ago that an NPP Government would be anti-Volta Region.

He said President J.A Kufuor and his able team have in four years turned round the fortunes of the country, which the people of the Volta Region have identified and are appreciating.

Mr. Awudi said the breaking down of the NDC monopoly in the Volta Region by the deep NPP incursions for the past four years has helped in changing the political landscape of the region, making campaigning by all parties more vigorous and interesting this time.

"We have so far inaugurated branch executives for 95 out of the 120 polling centres in our Ave-Avenor constituency amidst massive rush by the people to join the NPP," Mr. Awudi said.

He called on the people in his constituency to put a stop to the practice of destroying posters of opposing parties particularly of the NPP and the NDC, saying it is a punishable offence.

Mr. Awudi noted that no party wins or loses an election on the bases of the level of destruction caused to its campaign materials and said the practice is fruitless and could only be a panacea for tension and conflict in the area.

"The political will of all individuals to follow parties must be allowed to run unheeded to avoid issues that brought about conflict in some countries", he said.

Mr. Awudi asked the people to come out in their numbers in the December polls to vote for Mr. Nicholas Negble, NPP parliamentary candidate for Ave-Avenor and President Kufuor, whom he described as a born leader to continue with the massive development works in the area and the entire country.
