Over 16,000 registered voters covered in mopping-up exercise

Kumasi, Sept 22, GNA- A total of 16,579 registered voters out of the estimated 118,000 voters in the 30 districts of Ashanti were issued with photo identity cards during the mopping-up exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) last month.

Mr Samuel Yorke-Aidoo, Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, who said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi on Wednesday, said the Asante-Akim North District and the Obuasi Municipality recorded the highest number of 1,107 and 751 voters respectively.

He said it was because of the low turn out during the exercise that the Commission thought it wise to extend it to the end of September.

The Regional Director appealed to all registered voters to take advantage of the opportunity and take their photographs to enable them to exercise their franchise in the December election. Mr Yorke-Aidoo said the Commission was still compiling the voters' register and hoped the exhibition of the register would take place next month.
