Former MP for Mion launches re-election bid

Accra, July 14, GNA - Mr Ibrahim Alabira, former Member of Parliament for Mion Constituency in the Yendi District of the Northern Region, has launched a re-election bid to re-capture the seat for the Convention People's Party (CPP).

Mr Alabira, Proprietor of Sawaba Computer Services in Tamale, and MP for Mion between 1997 and 2000, told the Ghana News Agency, in an interview in Accra that he was more encouraged than ever before that the CPP would re-gain the seat.

"I am not prepared to throw away resources. I must win and I believe my chances are very bright," he said with confidence. Mr Alabira said his immediate priority, as MP would be how to facilitate the process of reconciliation in the constituency to ensure the socio-economic development of the predominantly farming area. "I am abreast with development issues in Mion which lacked potable water; had poor roads, inadequate school infrastructure, poor health and agricultural facilities and I have the track record and experience in handling these matters."

He said due to lack of potable water the Yendi District had been tagged as one of the most endemic guinea worm districts in Ghana. Mr Alabira said the Yendi crisis was affecting development in the District hence the need to find a lasting solution to bring about the re-emergence of Dagbon.

He suggested that those, who assassinated Ya-na Yakubu Andani II, Paramount Chief of Dagbon should be identified and prosecuted as part of the larger vision of promoting the country's democratisation process and the rule of law.

"All over the world, impunity is being punished and once this is done, there will be unity in Dagbon."

Mr Alabira, however, cautioned stakeholders to consider issues and not emotions when dealing with the protracted chieftaincy conflict.
