JOY sues Electoral Commission

An independent presidential candidate in the 2012 presidential elections, Jacob Osei Yeboah, popularly known as JOY, has filed a suit against the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana at the High Court over the credibility of the register of voters.

According to him, the current register is not credible because it has names of dead persons on it, yet the EC has failed to heed to several letters he has written detailing his concerns, hence the decision to go to the High Court.

The court has scheduled the hearing for Friday 2 September.

Speaking in an interview with Accra News Wednesday August 31, JOY said: “For example, at the EC’s own forum in 2015, it was revealed that about 587,000 names of dead persons were on the register. Rather than those names being removed, we have seen that the number has increased to 650,000 ahead of the elections, but we all know that the EC must take steps to remove the names of the dead from the register.”

He added that the EC had also failed to take steps to deal with political parties that had not complied with the law to have offices in most districts of the country, thus his prayer to the court to compel the EC to do the right thing by enforcing the regulations.
