Don't shy away from District Assembly Elections - Sapaty

Madam Modesta Annie Sapaty, West Akyem Municipal Director of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), has advised women not to shy away from the forthcoming District Assembly Elections.

Rather, she said, women should boldly campaign vigorously and give convincing messages to the electorate, so that they could win to represent them in the various Assemblies, to champion the cause of women, and to also lobby for development for their people.

Madam Sapaty gave the advice in an interaction with religious bodies, women and social groups, opinion leaders, as well as residents in the various communities within the Municipality, on the local elections slated for February this year.

She asserted that, it was most unfortunate that there were very capable and highly educated women in the country, and yet women’s representation in Parliament was just too minimal, and challenged them to take the lead this time round in the various Assemblies by striving to win seats in the elections.

She bemoaned the low turn-out in the 2010 District Assembly Elections, and appealed to the electorate to show the same interest as in national elections, by turning out in their numbers, and vote for trustworthy, selfless, committed and dedicated men and women to represent them, to ensure development in their various areas.

Madam Sapaty lauded the European Union (EU) for its financial support which made it possible for the Commission to reach out to a large number of stakeholders to sensitize them on the elections.
