Akyem Oda came to a standstill on Thursday when Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), arrived in the town to continue his nation-wide campaign tour.

The one week tour of the Eastern Region dubbed “Restoring Hope Tour” would take Nana Akufo-Addo to constituencies such as Akwatia, New Juaben South, Ofoase Ayirebi, Upper West Akyem, Lower West Akyem and Akyem Swedru.

He is accompanied on the tour by Mr. Lord Commey, Director of Operations for the campaign team, Mr. Dan Botwe, the Member of Parliament for Okere, Mr. Abu Jinapor, member of the campaign team, Mr. Yaw Osafo-Maafo, former MP for Akyem Oda, Mr. Felix Owusu Agyepong, former MP for Akyem Swedru, some MPs and all regional executive of the party.

The NPP presidential candidate was mobbed by a joyous crowd of women, both young and old who sang party songs to welcome him.

He interacted with petty traders, market women, shoppers and commuters and told them that he would recapture power in 2012.

Addressing a rally at the Akyem Oda main lorry park, Nana Akufo-Addo, who lost the 2008 election, told them that he came to announce his readiness and determination to work hard to recapture power in 2012 from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He expressed optimism to the 2012 election and urged the people to pray for him for good health and that he would bring back hope and smiles to the majority of Ghanaians.

Drivers expressed joy at meeting the Nana Akufo-Addo and appealed to him to save them from the current economic situation.

Nana Akufo-Addo, after listening to their concerns, appealed to them to vote for the NPP in December to continue the good works of former President John Agyekum Kufuor. He said the NDC government had been insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians and appealed to them not to make a mistake of maintaining the NDC in power.

Nana Akufo-Addo also reiterated his commitment to ensure free secondary and quality education at all levels and urged the people not to listen to those saying he could not do it.

He said the NPP government led by the former President Kufuor introduced a lot of social interventions such as the National Health Insurance, Capitation Grant, Schools Feeding Programme, Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty and many others.

He criticized the government for not doing enough to make the interventions work effectively as expected.

The MP for Akyem Oda, Mr Owusu Boateng, said it was during the time of NPP government that Akyem Oda experienced massive development including the construction of town roads and appealed to the people to come in their numbers and vote massively for Nana Akufo-Addo and also retain him in parliament.
