Campaign for Akwatia NDC Primary begins

Akwatia Sept. 24, GNA - Three persons are in a hot contest to win the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Parliamentary Primary for the Akwatia Constituency for the 2012 general election.

Mr Mohamed Ahmed Baba Jamal, a Deputy Minister of Information, Mr Kweku Effisah, popularly known as Kweku Ampease and Mrs Christiana Bediako, a teacher, and a member of Kwaebibirem District Assembly have filed their nomination papers for the contest.

The contestants are busily preparing for the race with Mr Effisah starting his campaign on Friday.

Launching it at Akwatia, Mr Effisah said he was the most marketable of the three.

He said he had already visited the entire community and consulted all those who mattered.

From his consultations and meetings with the prospective delegates for the poll, he said, he was convinced that he was widely accepted and would, therefore, emerge victorious.

He said after Mr Baba Jamal had trice failed to clinch the Akwatia seat after the NDC won in 1992 and 1996, it was time for the delegates to consider someone else and that person should be him.

Mr Effisah said he was prepared to accept the outcome of the primary if it was fairly and transparently conducted.

In that case, he would throw his weight behind whoever would win, adding that Mr Baba Jamal was his close friend and there was no reason why he should not join his campaign should he win the primary.

He, however, called on the two other contestants also to promise to back whoever got the nod of the delegates.

It is envisaged that Mr Baba Jamal would launch his campaign at Akwatia on Sunday.

Supporters of Mrs Bediako also say she is a good candidate and could pull a surprise.
