Call for Discipline, Involvement and Unity

The office of Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom has noticed with much unhappiness, the media display of hard words that ensued between the Chairman of the CPP Mr. Nylander on one side and some members of the party in the persons of James Kwabena Bomfeh, Hajia Hamdatu and Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa on the other side last week. We consider what happened quite disappointing, inappropriate, troubling and disturbing. It temporarily brought to a halt the positive progress the Party had made since the 2008 elections.

It is on record that the Mr. Nylander the Chairman & Leader of the Party last year led the national executives whose terms of office had not ended to agree to an early congress to choose new leaders who would then have some time to work together before the election of presidential and parliamentary candidates. It was our hope that all those agitating for a change in leadership would go to the field and help organise their supporters to become executive members who would then support their preferred candidates for national office. Early congress was to give the party an advantage of starting active campaigning earlier than it had been able to do in previous elections. This is the first of its kind in the party since the Fourth Republic came to being.

We have had enough internal conflicts in the CPP. Time is up for us all to come together to support the leadership of the party to promote the good image of the CPP.

Since the 2008 elections, the CPP has experienced some innovations. They were not all original ideas of the National Chairman. The innovations include the introduction of Shadow Cabinet, a retreat to clarify the CPP vision and strategies, a Family Dialogue to prepare an action plan to improve the CPP and inclusiveness of all persons in the Central Committee including Prof. Akosa, Mr Aggudey, Mr. Bright Akwetey, Dr. Nduom, Mr. Jantuah, etc. What we should do is to work to innovate further and invigorate the Party some more. We expect the Chairman elected by congress this year to do more. This will require unity. Given these grounds, it is our expectation that people with genuine grievances within the party should take advantage and channel their grievances through appropriate internal mechanisms for amicable resolution and not in the media just to destroy the image of specific individuals. When this is done, it is their entire party that suffers. And we all suffered a serious setback last week.


It is quite obvious that as we are approaching elections, people will support different candidates for different reasons. This is normal and we cannot be against it. Yet we do expect that supporting a candidate should be through active campaigning using positive messages and not the destruction of others in order to make their candidates popular. Past experience has thought us that, when this happens, it becomes very difficult for us to get united again after elections in order to compete in the national elections.


We do not understand why Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom’s name should come up during such exchanges between the Chairman and the Prof. Akosa. If anyone has problem with the Chairman, why should it be linked to Dr. Nduom. It is quite clear such people are not able to match the competition that Dr. Nduom is trying hard to encourage in the party. Dr. Nduom is one man who has relentlessly helped the party in various areas for the purpose of active organisation. Dr. Nduom has helped the party open various offices in the Eastern, Ashanti, Central and other regions in the country. He is one of the few people in the party who have directly supported the party to do grassroot organisation all this while. Quite apart from that, he has provided direct funding to most of the ward, constituency and regional organisation of the party after the 2008 elections till now. He does not only provide funding, he has travelled throughout the country to visit most constituencies just to make sure that there is party organisation going on.

We want to encourage Prof. Akosa and the others to do likewise – to go to the grassroots, particularly their home constituencies and region and help them recruit new members, organise and find logistics. This Party will become stronger with all hands on deck – not with some hands and minds against others’.


On the issue of Dr. Nduom using money to buy his way into the party, we believe this is a cheap talk and a non-starter. Prof. Akosa had the opportunity under the NPP Administration of former President Kufuor to lead the Ghana Health Service to show his leadership capabilities. We believe that he must have made friends what with the thousands and thousands of nurses, pharmacists, doctors and medical practitioners of all types that he worked with. He worked with many suppliers and contractors. He frequently travels abroad to work for pay. He is not a poor man. He should not hide behind a “money” palaver. Dr. Nduom is not the only CPP member who owns a business. There are many others including Mr. K. T. Dadzie, Mr. Kwaw Ansah, Dr. Kwabena Duffour, Alhaji Asuma Banda, Mr. Kwamena Benyarko, Dr. Sakara, Mr. Nylander, Mr. Mike Eghan, Mr. Gordon Etroo and many, many others. The CPP is NOT against entrepreneurship. Rather we encourage Ghanaians to own successful businesses in their own country. That is why we want to bring the economy back home!

We want to call on all CPP members to remain steady and united for a progressive campaign in the 2012 general elections.
