CPP Youth challenges party leadership to release congress timetable

Accra, June 15, GNA - The Concerned Youth for Convention People's Party's Renaissance on Wednesday called on the party leadership to immediately make public the detailed timetable for the National Delegates' Congress to elect National leaders of party slated tentatively for between six to eight weeks' time.

"The inconsistency in fixing a definite date for Congress and inability of the National leadership led by Mr Ladi Nylander to outline the Congress calendar - dates for opening and closing of nominations, vetting of aspirants and qualification of delegates and other vital information - are dangerous.

"The national leadership seems to be playing a smart game with the Congress in which most of them are seeking re-election holding the master card close to their chest against other aspirants and releasing vital information at their comfort," Mr Frederick Opoku, Spokesperson for the CPP Youth Group, said in Accra.

Concerned Youth for CPP's Renaissance is a youth pressure group within the CPP family formed to support the leadership and the entire party to convince the youth in the country to associate with the party.

He explained that the party leadership had postponed the Congress date three times since April, 93the current date of between six to eight weeks is very ambiguous..."

"Things are getting worse, leading to incessant court actions by some party faithful who, for whatever reasons, are dissatisfied with some decisions, which, to them, are alien to the constitution of the party.

"As a concerned youth group in the party, we consider the act of omission on the part of the current leadership under the watch of Mr. Nylander not only regrettable but also shameful to the party.

"This to us is a manifestation of the level of incompetence on the part of Mr. Nylander who is the leader and Chairman of the Party." Mr Opoku noted that previous Congress details indicated that about two weeks were needed for opening of nominations for national executive office aspirants.

He further indicated that about a week would be required for vetting of aspirants. In accordance with CPP norms constituency conferences must follow after all the branches have been duly organized and the list of members attending the branch general meeting and constituency conferences compiled.

Photographs of delegates to the regional conference must be taken and the records sent to the national secretariat to facilitate the drawing up of the Congress register. All these must be done before a national delegates' congress.

He, therefore, appealed to the National Executive Committee of the party to come out immediately with a definite timetable for the Congress.

Three leading members of the party - former Chairman Professor Edmund N. Delle, CPP's only Member of Parliament, Ms Samia Nkrumah and the incumbent chairman, Mr Nylander 96 have expressed their interest to contest for the chairmanship slot.
