Election of presiding member ends in deadlock

Twifo Praso (C/R), April 1, GNA - The election of a presiding member for the Twifo=96Heman=96Lower Denkyira District Assembly ended in a deadlock for the second time when none of the two contestants secured two-thirds of the 65 votes cast.

Mr Michael Mawuli Adjolo had 27 votes while Mr Knight Kweku Acquah had 31 votes with seven of the ballots rejected in the first round. In the second round, Mr. Adjovlo got 29 votes, while Mr. Knight Acquah had 36 votes.

In view of the stalemate, the election was postponed indefinitely by Mr Joseph Foster Andoh, the District Chief Executive for the Area. The District Electoral Officer at Twifo Praso supervised the election. Mr Korankye Sakyi, the assembly member for Juakwa electoral area was unanimously elected as the acting presiding to steer the affairs of the Assembly until one was elected.

Eight sub-committees comprising Finance/Administration Economic Planning, Social Services, Works, Justice, Security, Education, Agriculture and Public Complaints were formed. Earlier the DCE, Mrs Elizabeth Amoah Tetteh, Member of Parliament for Ati Morkwa Constituency, the deputy Minister of Education and chiefs in the area, had pleaded with the house to ensure that a presiding member was elected to enable the Assembly to discharge its duties.

The DCE explained that the Assembly spends a lot of money in organizing such meetings and expressed the hope that they would elect a presiding member soon to save money for development.
