Awal Mohammed says calls from members of the NDC for the NPP to replace Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader could actually strengthen the position of the incumbent.

According to Awal, the NPP has not seen any serious internal opposition to Afenyo-Markin’s leadership, despite several names being mentioned as possible replacements.

“The NDC people are asking we should change him,” he said on Joy Prime, stressing that the calls were coming from outside the NPP rather than from within the party.

Awal said some of the names being linked to a possible replacement are people who are regularly seen around Afenyo-Markin, making the argument for his removal difficult to understand.

“Almost all those names that are being bandied around, they’re around him,” he said.

He argued that the NPP’s continued support for Afenyo-Markin is partly influenced by pressure from the governing NDC.

“We are solidly behind him. And we think that the more they tell us to remove him, the more we have cause to keep him there,” Awal stated.

He also maintained that Afenyo-Markin is doing what the NPP expects of him in his capacity as Minority Leader.

“Again, he’s doing what we have really asked him to do,” he added.
