Members of the New Patriotic Party NPP and supporters of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, are preparing to host a candlelight vigil in his honour on Friday, August 14.

According to a post sighted by GhanaWeb on X on August 12, 2026, the event, which is themed “Light of Unity” under the banner “Ashanti Stands With Wontumi,” is scheduled to take place from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Dr Bawumia Campaign Office in Asokwa.

The large banner promoting the vigil features a portrait of the chairman and a lit candle.

Following this development, the banner has sparked outrage on X, with users questioning the current state of politics in Ghana.

According to some users, the imagery appears to suggest a call for the death of the incarcerated chairman, while others argue that it reflects a deliberate blind eye to his actions — including allegations of misusing government funds and destroying lands.

"Imagine telling your children you're going to a candlelight vigil and they ask, Who died? Then you say, Nobody, we are supporting someone in prison. Ghanaian politics is something else," one user wrote.

"They wish him dead or what? NPP and foolishness are like twins born on the same day," another user added.

Another user sought to know: "Someone commits a crime and a whole party publicly supports him. They think we all fools anaa? If they respect Ghanaians, they would have supported him privately not in our faces."

"We are not serious as a country .. someone who spent government money heerhh," one user also wrote on X.

Wontumi, who has served as Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP since 2014, was convicted on July 20, 2026, by an Accra High Court on charges related to illegal mining activities linked to his company, Akonta Mining Limited, and its concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.

He was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour. The court found him guilty of offences including assigning mineral rights without the required ministerial approval and facilitating unlicensed mining operations.
