The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has condemned the arrest and remand of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, describing the development as troubling and a potential threat to free speech.
In a post shared on his Facebook page on May 13, 2026, he said the development raises serious concerns about the use of state institutions in ways that could silence political voices.
"What has been done to Kwame Baffoe, Abronye DC, Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, is a profound constitutional wrong and must be condemned without equivocation.
"The arrest, prosecution, and remand of a citizen for words spoken in the public square is not the administration of justice. It is the weaponisation of the criminal law against political opinion, and it represents a reckless and deliberate misuse of the prosecutorial resources of this Republic", he wrote.
Afenyo-Markin stressed that while he does not "condone irresponsible speech" law enforcement is important, it must always be balanced with constitutional protections.
“Where speech genuinely damages reputation, Ghanaian law provides a remedy, a civil remedy, measured, proportionate, and designed precisely for that purpose.
Abronye rearrested and remanded - Reports
“What it does not provide, and what it was never designed to provide, is the conversion of a civil grievance, assuming without admitting that one exists, into a criminal prosecution, the marching of a man before a Circuit Court, the denial of his bail, and his consignment to the custody of a state intelligence service. That is not justice. That is persecution", the post said.
Afenyo- Markin further called for due process to be strictly followed, insisting that the courts must remain independent and free from political influence.
He called on the Bureau of National Intelligence to release Abronye.
“Abronye DC must be released from BNI custody immediately. His detention is constitutionally indefensible", he added.
Abronye has been remanded for two weeks by the BNI in relation to the publication of a video online in which he allegedly made derogatory remarks about a Circuit Court judge.
