Arresting someone for writing ‘dumsor is back again’ is nonsense – Ama Daaku

New Patriotic Party, NPP Communicator Ellen Ama Daaku has criticised what she describes as increasing arrests linked to social media activity by the ruling government.

She argued that online comments should not automatically result in detention.

Ama Daaku referred to the recent arrest of an NPP constituency organiser over a Facebook post where he stated that, ‘dumsor is back.’

According to her, the individual had already agreed to honour an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department with a lawyer before security officers picked him up.

“He did not refuse to go. He was invited and asked to appear the next day with his lawyer,” she said, speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, monitored by MyNewsGh.

She questioned why the arrest was carried out before the agreed meeting date.

“The family and party executives spent the whole night looking for him before they later found him,” she added.

The discussion comes after former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia accused the NDC government of undermining democratic freedoms through intimidation of opposition supporters.

Ellen Ama Daaku argued that political parties should tolerate criticism and opposing opinions online.

“Somebody writing something on Facebook that you disagree with does not mean the person should be arrested,” she said.

She also called for restraint from political actors and security agencies.

“Governments will come and go. We all have to respect ourselves,” she stated.
