Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of orchestrating an “endless assault” on the fundamental rights of NPP officers, activists, and supporters.

In a statement issued on May 13, 2026, Dr Bawumia detailed what he described as a persistent pattern of political intimidation since the NDC assumed office on January 7, 2025.

“I have observed with great concern the endless assault on the fundamental rights of officers, activists, and supporters of the New Democratic Party (NPP) across the country by this National Democratic Congress (NDC) government,” he stated.

According to the former Vice President, the government’s actions, including arrests, detentions, attacks, and what he called “unconscionable bail conditions”, have become a recurring feature of the current administration.

'Democracy and free speech under siege in Ghana' - Dr Bawumia

Dr Bawumia specifically pointed to two recent incidents as examples of what he termed acts of intimidation.

He cited the arrest and detention of David Essandoh, who was taken into custody for lamenting on social media about the return of power outages.

He also condemned the decision to detain the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye.

“The latest of such acts of intimidation has been the arrest, detention, and subsequent release of David Essandoh for lamenting on social media about the return of dumsor, and the bizarre decision to put the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, into custody,” he said.

He warned that these actions are undermining free speech and reversing Ghana’s democratic gains.

“These actions undermine free speech and are setting Ghana’s democracy backwards. I condemn in the strongest terms the unholy collaboration between the Executive, state investigative agencies, and some elements within the judiciary to use intimidation and harassment to silence members of the New Patriotic Party,” Dr Bawumia stated.

He further cautioned that political fortunes may one day reverse.

“I therefore serve notice to officers of the state who are active participants in this unholy enterprise that the day of accountability will come and the abuse of state power will be accounted for,” he said.

Dr Bawumia also urged NPP supporters to remain resolute, encouraging them not to give in to fear but to continue holding the government accountable.

“To patriots around the country, I urge you all to stay firm by refusing to succumb to intimidation while continuing your civic duty to hold the government accountable to its promises.

“We fought hard for this democracy and as a party, we cannot surrender it to intimidation from those who possess temporary power today,” he added.
