The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected claims that it is pursuing a third-term agenda for President John Dramani Mahama, reaffirming its commitment to Ghana’s Constitution and democratic traditions.

Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the General Secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, said the NDC would not support any effort to amend the Constitution to extend presidential tenure, irrespective of its numerical strength in Parliament.

According to Kwetey, Ghana remains a benchmark for democratic transition in sub-Saharan Africa, largely due to its respect for constitutional term limits.

He stressed that the NDC would not take any action that undermines the country’s constitutional framework.

He added that President Mahama had already made his stance clear by putting an end to discussions suggesting a third-term ambition.

“We should never encourage any situation that disrupts our constitutional stipulations. The president has spoken clearly on the matter and did well by shutting down such conversations so it does not appear he is entertaining them,” Kwetey said.

The NDC General Secretary further noted that although the party currently holds a strong majority in Parliament, it would not misuse that advantage to push through constitutional changes for political or personal benefit.

He reiterated that Ghana’s democratic credentials continue to serve as an inspiration across the sub-region.

“The party itself that has promised to ensure that we do what is right for the country has to ensure that, in this spirit of reset, even though we have such a huge majority in Parliament, we use it only to do what is good for the country and not try to change the Constitution because we are trying to make maybe one person happy,” he explained.

“Across sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana remains one of the countries that has consistently provided a model for democratic transition and that is something we must protect.”
