The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has called on the President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a deputy to support the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who he says is currently overwhelmed by the demands of the role.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, he noted that the health minister has been managing the ministry alone since his appointment, with no deputy to assist him.

“Akandoh has no deputy. His hair is getting gray. The man is suffering. One moment he is at the border, the other moment he is here. He needs a deputy," he stated.

In addition to the appeal for a deputy, Annoh-Dompreh recommended that the health minister briefs Parliament every two weeks to ensure continuous engagements and oversight.

"So, Speaker, I employ your consequential directives, the threat of COVID, more funding should be given; he needs more funds. Then secondly, every two weeks, he should be meeting our health committee and briefing them. I'm not saying come to the Chamber, but you should carry the health committee along and then the chair can come and breathe plenary. This is important. The minister has no deputy. The executive president should be reminded," he stated.

His comments came on the same day Kwabena Mintah Akandoh confirmed that the country had recorded 107 new cases of COVID-19 at the University of Ghana, with 316 additional suspected cases under investigation.
