Divine Nkrumah, Director of Operations of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying the party and its minority members behave as if they have never wronged Ghana and, therefore, deserve special treatment.
His comments come after the Minority in Parliament accused the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, of bias and partisanship during the vetting of ministerial nominees.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Dr. Gideon Boako, the Member of Parliament for Tano North, alleged that the Chairman’s conduct obstructed a diligent and thorough vetting process.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the Chairman of the Appointments Committee was the first real obstacle to a diligent vetting of the ministerial nominees," Dr. Boako stated.
"He denied the Ghanaian people and the minority members of the committee the opportunity to conduct a thorough vetting of the nominees. He was protective of the nominees and extremely partisan."
In an interview on Onua FM, monitored by GhanaWeb, Divine Nkrumah said the NPP has started criticizing the Mahama-led government too early, despite the fact that they did no better while in power.
He added that such comments from the NPP anger many Ghanaians.
"You see, when I see some of these people, I get angry. I think it is too early for them to be coming out to speak. When they speak like this, it spites us. What they did to Ghanaians—the mess, the disrespect, and the exhibition of arrogance during their tenure in government—is still fresh in our minds. Even with the split numbers in Parliament, look at the disrespect and arrogance they showed us. Then, all of a sudden, when you are in the minority, you still want to be on our necks and dictate how things should go. Look at the posture of Afenyo-Markin, look at how he was behaving. During the vetting process, did you see how they treated the minority? So much disrespect."
He continued: "Today, when the tables have turned, you still want to be treated as special human beings, as if you are better than others. This same Gideon Boako who is speaking—was he not Dr. Bawumia's spokesperson? Is he not the person who said they would scrap the E-Levy? Then he says at the Appointments Committee of Parliament that it would be injurious to scrap the E-Levy. Can we trust such a person? Is he not being disingenuous?"
Nkrumah added: "The way they are doing things reminds us of the mess during their time in government; it is so fresh in our minds. When I see them, the way they talk and behave as if they have never wronged Ghanaians before, it is infuriating. If you committed the same mistakes yesterday—the Cathedral issue is still there; you wasted millions of dollars of taxpayers' money on just a hole—and you say you won't speak about that but want to speak about a well, are you not provoking people to anger?"
"The NPP and the minority behave as if they have not wronged Ghana and hence should be given special treatment. "
