Sociologist to contest as NDC parliamentary candidate for Nkwanta South

Accra, March 27, GNA- Mr Peter Kenyensu, 44, a Rural Sociologist and a Chartered Marketer, is seeking the nomination of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to contest as Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkwanta South in the Volta Region. Mr Kenyensu had therefore joined two other candidates to wrest the seat from Mr Gershon Gbediame, the MP for the main opposition party, who is seeking re-election for three consecutive times. The aspirant who spoke to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday said he joined the race due to what he described as the popular sentiments of the people for change.

Mr Kenyensu said he was a founding member of the NDC as a student at the University of Ghana, Legon in 1992; and had interacted with the people in the constituency to know their needs. He noted that lack of market for agricultural produce and the prudent harnessing of honey and cassava, which are the main income for the area has led to widespread poverty. Mr Kenyensu said: "We have a modern forest reserve in the constituency and nobody is marketing it to improve on the lot of the people."

He pledged to consult broadly to turn the fortunes of the people around if he gets the nod of the people to lead them as MP. "The people are very eager to see me as MP," he said. 27 March 08
