Ex-District Commissioner advises NPP

Nkoranza (B/A), Aug 1, GNA - Mr. George Obeng Boateng, a District Commissioner in the First Republic, has urged the New Patriotic Party to avoid petty squabbles and internal conflicts and rather forge ahead in unity towards a resounding victory in the 2008 elections. Mr. Boateng, 79, the first District Commissioner for Nkoranza, Techiman, Wenchi and Kintampo in the Convention People's Party regime gave the advice at a get-together organized by the Nkoranza District Assembly for more than 100 senior citizens at Nkoranza. The get-together was to honour the old citizens for their hard work and efforts towards the development of the district and the country a whole.

Mr. Boateng stressed the need for the country's leaders to eschew negative tendencies and place the development of the nation above their personal interests. He advised members of political parties to desist from using provocative language and insults during electioneering campaigns to avoid creating unnecessary tension. He said the 1966 coup that ousted the CPP government adversely affected the development of the country and advised Ghanaians not to encourage "such reversal of the clock of progress again".

Mr. James Kwabena Appiah-Awuah, Nkoranza District Chief Executive, paid tribute to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his colleagues of the 'Big Six' for the role they played towards the country's development. He commended the government for instituting the day to recognize and honour senior citizens for their contributions towards the development of the country. Mr. Appiah-Awuah called on other workers and the youth to emulate the senior citizens and offer active and selfless services to move the country forward. He appealed to the senior citizens to offer advice for the accelerated development of their communities and urged the youth to respect the aged.
