NDC Has No Running Mate

Mills Has Not Approached Me – John Mahama

Contrary to rumours being speculated by sections of the media, the supposedly selected running mate of Prof. John Evans Atta Mills says, “I am not aware that I have been selected. John Dramani Mahama, MP for Bole/Bamboi and NDC spokesman on Communication told the Heritage yesterday in a telephone interview that since the party went to congress last December to elect its presidential candidate, the National Executive Council (NEC), the only body within the party’s structure to have a say in the selection of the running mate had not met to consider the issue.

He debunked the story published yesterday in the Daily Guide, an Accra daily that he had been selected to partner the former vice president in the next year presidential election.“The Daily Guide got it all wrong because according to the party’s constitution, the running mate is selected by the candidate in consultation with the NEC, and not the Council of Elders,” he stated, adding, “Moreover you can’t select someone without talking to him.” He explained that he had not been approached by Prof. Mills to partner him in the forth-coming election. When asked whether he would consider the offer when approached, the soft-spoken former minister of communications said, “I am a politician and I don’t answer hypothetical questions.

I will cross the bridge when I get there.” It will be recalled those months before the party went to congress last December to elect its presidential candidate, rumours were rife in the media that Mr. Mahama was nursing the ambition of contesting the slot.

Also there were reports that the youth within the party were rooting for him to run; and to end the speculations, the MP for Bole/Bamboi had to write a statement to the media and those rooting for him announcing his intention not to contest, claiming that he was still young and therefore had more time to consider that option. Mr. Mahama, who has just returned from Ethiopia, maintained that until the NEC meets and decides on the running mate to Prof. Mills, “anything anybody writes is wrong.
