Weightlifting Ass. selects five for Africa championship

Accra, Aug 17, GNA 96 The Ghana Weightlifting Association (GWA) has selected five lifters to represent the nation at the impending Africa Weightlifting Championship scheduled for Morocco next week. This was after a one-day justify-your-inclusion exercise conducted at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex in Accra on Wednesday towards the preparations for the championship.

The selected lifters, according to information gathered by the GNA Sports, are Dora Abotsi, who will represent the nation in the 48 kilogram category with Daniel Darko competing in the 52 kilogram category.

Other competitors are Seth Degbe, who will make a case for the nation in the 62 kilogram category.

Albert Abotsi, the nation's first medallists in the sport, will compete in the 94 kilograme category.

Abotsi who won all three medals in the All Africa Games in Abuja Nigeria, will seek to make amends this time after failing to win a medal at the last Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. Madjitey Fetrie, Ghana's gold medallist at the last Commonwealth Games is a medal hopeful for the nation as he competes in the 77 kilogram.

Fetrie, who doubles as the trainer of the team, expressed satisfaction with the training regimen so far when GNA Sports contacted him.

He said the lifters are now set to take the continent by storm when they compete with the continent's greats at the championship. The competition is fixed for August 25-29 and the Ghanaian contingent is scheduled to leave for Morocco in the middle of next week.
