The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has criticised members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament for their frequent walkouts, describing their actions as unpatriotic.
While addressing the floor during the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review debate on Monday, July 28, 2025, Murtala Muhammed challenged the Minority’s moral right to claim patriotism, arguing that they “have staged more walkouts in this Parliament than their total number in Parliament.”
The lawmaker argued that patriotic citizens who prioritise their country’s interests do not engage in walkouts, but rather remain to exercise oversight over the government and present reasoned arguments.
“… As a matter of fact, at a time when you had leading members of your party who were telling you that there were some ministers who were not doing well and those ministers should be booted out, you all cowed into submission. Today, you are talking about that. Mr Speaker, now my brother is telling us that they are patriots.
“As a matter of fact, you have staged more walk outs in this Parliament than your total number in Parliament. You have staged more walk outs in this Parliament than the total number of your representation. Patriotic citizens do not walk out but they argue with reason. Patriotic citizens do not just hold press conferences; in fact, I am told that your other name is press conferences,” he said.
The lawmaker’s criticism of the Minority comes on the back of their staged walk out during the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson’s presentation of the Mid-Year Budget review.
The Minority, left the chamber and drove to the Jubilee House to petition the President over illegal mining (galamsey) and the electoral violence that marred the Ablekuma North election rerun.
