The National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has clarified that despite President John Dramani Mahama’s reset agenda for the country, many members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) currently holding positions in government institutions will remain at post.
According to Asiedu Nketiah, the NDC believes in meritocracy and competency, not partisan purges within state institutions.
He emphasised that the focus should be on who can effectively deliver results, rather than replacing individuals purely based on political affiliation.
Speaking in an interview on Accra FM, which has since been shared widely on social media, Nketiah revealed that his personal experiences working in the public sector and his subsequent dismissal following a change in government have shaped his current position on the matter.
“The cleanup doesn’t mean removing all NPP members from office and replacing them with NDC sympathizers who cannot even do the work,” he said.
“That is not what we are about to do. For us, it is about the nation’s interest. Unless someone has committed an offence, there’s no need to remove them,” he added.
He further explained that President Mahama has no intention of initiating a mass dismissal of NPP appointees simply to install NDC loyalists.
“For President Mahama to sit and look at all NPP members in state institutions with the aim of sweeping them out and replacing them with NDC people, it’s not going to work.
“Even for me, why should all of those people be sacked if they are doing their jobs well? I wouldn’t encourage him to do that. What we are looking for is meritocracy, people who can do the job well,” he added.
Reflecting on his own experience, Nketiah said, “I have worked in the government sector before, and when the NPP came to power, they accused all of us of being thieves and dismissed us all. It didn’t help anybody in the country, and we have learned a lesson from that.”
