The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has clarified that heated exchanges in Parliament should not be mistaken for anger.

Instead, he said these disagreements are part of the democratic process.

Addressing concerns about recent confrontations in the House via a video shared by GraphicOnline on X on Thursday, January 1, 2026, he explained that what may appear as chaos is simply lawmakers expressing differing views.

“Don’t think that we are fighting. It is only our way of expressing disagreement. We are not at war in Parliament; we are only expressing our disagreements,” he said.

According to him, the atmosphere in Parliament often returns to normal after such incidents, urging residents to avoid unnecessary conflicts inspired by such things.

Afenyo-Markin advised that physical confrontations only create personal problems, stating that, “That’s why when there’s chaos, you see calmness the next day in Parliament. So, if you go and fight, you are fighting your own trouble, so don’t fight,” he emphasised.

His remarks come amid public debates over the conducts of MPs during heated sessions, reinforcing the view that disagreements are natural in parliamentary democracy but must be managed with civility.
