Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin proved his linkage to the people of the Volta Region and specifically, his acclaimed Ewe roots in parliament on Wednesday, July 31, 2025, when he stunned the house with an Ewe song.
The song, which preceded his contribution to the mid-year budget debate on the floor, appeared to have drawn rapt attention from members of both sides in the house, particularly the Volta Caucus.
According to the minority leader, he was moved to quickly recall the song, which he said his grandfather taught him when he was a young boy.
He explained that he was drawn to sing in the spirit when the Speaker addressed him as "Togbui," which translates to King in the English language.
"When you addressed me as Togbui, you reminded me of my grandpa. When we were young in "Yokonokpei", he had this song – very shocking. I don't know if you remember," he said.
