Voters' registration exercise on track in W/R

Sekondi, May 9, GNA - The 2006 revision of the voters' register has started at 452 registration and electoral centres in the Western Region. Mr Stephen Opoku-Mensah, Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sekondi on Monday.

He said, "The revision is a limited registration exercise" targeted at those, who have turned 18 years or are 18 years and above but could not register in 2004, as well as those, who registered in 2004 but could not have their photographs taken.

Mr Opoku-Mensah said registered voters, who did not have their photographs taken in 2004 would not be registered again but have photographs taken and issued with new identity cards. He said two hundred and twenty six (226) camera teams were participating in the exercise in the region. He said each camera team would serve two registration and electoral centres.

Mr Opoku-Mensah said the exercise was progressing smoothly at all the centres and there had not been any complaints of double registration or other malpractices associated with voter registration.
