Two groups to support common independent candidates

Accra, July 22, GNA - Two groups have joined hands to support common independent presidential and parliamentary candidates for the December 7 elections.

The People's Independent Movement (PIM) and the National Unity Movement (NUM) said in a statement released in Accra on Tuesday that the decision was taken at a meeting in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region last Saturday.

They said they were calling for a period of non-partisan national political leadership for true social transformation. "The move is in pursuit of the two movements' common objective to bring independent candidates together under one non-party political organisation that would make and guide the candidates to mount a common platform, deliver a common campaign message and offer a common political programme under a common non-partisan political leadership in pursuit if the movements' objective to provide genuine alternatives and true change in national politics," the statement said.

The statement was signed by Dr S.K. Ankamah for NUM and Nana Addo-Aikins for PIM.

The movements said the current system of democratic governance had proved unsuitable and called on voters to link up and pool energy and resources together to provide a more formidable and purposeful political base for the independent candidates to fight or a successful political struggle to win political power in December.
