Private legal practitioner, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, has praised President John Dramani Mahama, for firmly rejecting the possibility of a third term in office.

Brako-Powers commended the President's stance, which puts an end to persistent calls from some members of the public and within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to amend the constitution to allow him to run for president again in 2028.

Speaking to 3news.com, on August 28, Brako-Powers described the President's comments as a progressive step that rightly shuts down those pushing for a constitutional change.

He noted that such an amendment would be a disservice to the nation and an "insult to the intelligence of all Ghanaians."

He stressed that no single person holds all the answers to the country's challenges, and that President Mahama's position protects Ghana's constitution and its democratic progress.

President Mahama addressed the issue directly during a bilateral meeting with Singapore's President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

"I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline," he stated.
According to Brako-Powers, this statement gives a clear answer to those who have been advocating for constitutional changes.

The calls for a constitutional amendment to extend presidential term limits have been a recurring topic in recent months, despite Ghana's 1992 Constitution explicitly limiting presidents to two four-year terms.

Amending this entrenched provision would require a national referendum.
