Tema West Parliamentary aspirants meet electorates

Tema, Nov 01, GNA-- Parliamentary aspirants in the Tema West constituency on Sunday interacted with the electorate at a public forum and told them about their plans when voted into parliament.

The contestants were Mr Abraham Osei Aidoo, New Patriotic Party (NPP) incumbent MP, Mr George Medie, National Democratic congress (NDC), Mr Allan Lomotey of the Convention People's Party, (CPP), Mr Kojo Amoako, Grand Coalition whiles the independent candidates were Madam Ayele Bonnie Adjavon, Mr Kenneth Nana Amoateng and Mr Justice Awortwe.

Organised by the Community Social Responsibility Movement (CSRM), a Tema-based NGO in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Stifung Foundation, the form offered the candidates the opportunity to interact with the electorate.

Some of the constituents expressed concern about the inhuman treatments meted out to casual workers and labourers in some industries that lead to social unrest in the municipality.

They also identified waste disposal as a major problem that the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) had failed to tackle.

They appealed to the candidates to put aside their political differences and collaborate with each after the elections and help develop Tema.

Mr Ossei-Aidoo, commenting on the issue of casual labour, said the labour law is currently under consideration in parliament and when passed into law would protect the interest of casual labourers especially concerning their social security.

He assured them that when returned to power he would work to ensure that those who fall within the poverty reduction line are brought to appreciable social status.

Mr Medie identified lack of job opportunities as a major problem confronting the youth and promised to use his office to create job avenues for them when voted into power.

Mr Amoako said most workers did not know their rights and he would ensure that the Trades Union Congress was strengthened to educate workers on their rights to solve injustice in the workers front. Mr Lomotey promised to revive sporting activities among the youth to generate funds to source development in the municipality and said he would collaborate with the TMA so that with funds from the MP's Common Fund waste disposal problem in the municipality could be solved. Madam Adjavon said given the mandate she would unite with other MPs in the municipality and work together with the TMA to solve most problems confronting the municipality.

As an educationist she promised to help the youth acquire vocational skills.

Mr Amoateng promised to support the youth set up their own business with his MPS Common Fund.

Mr Awortwe said when given the mandate he would accelerate the development of the constituency. 01 Nov. 04
