The opposition New Patriotic Party (NDC) has accused the Upper East Regional Police Command of favouring the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) party and scheming to better its chances in the Talensi bye-elections which holds in few days.

The Electoral Commission has set July 7 for the bye-election which has been necessitated by the resignation of the former NPP MP Robert Nachinab Mosore who has been enskinned as Tongo Chief under the name Tongorana Kubilsong Nalebegtan.

Barely four days to the elections, campaign activities in Talensi have intensified with the contest becoming keener among the two leading political parties.

Both parties are accusing each other of using unorthodox means to win the coveted seat.

National Organizer of the NPP, Sammy Awuku, stated that the open bias shown by the Upper East Regional Police Commander is most regrettable and must be condemned.

He explained that the NPP on 30th June engaged the police and informed them of its intention to hold its rally at Tongo on 5th July.

Sammy Awuku disclosed that upon notification, the senior Police Officer who presided over the meeting then searched through the political parties file and informed them that since no party had slated its programme for the same date, the NPP had been cleared to holds its rally.

“Even the Regional PRO who was in that meeting said, straight away this is an issue of first come, first serve and so we should be rest assured that we’ll have the necessary protection and all other services required.”

Sammy Awuku narrated further that but in a shocking twist of events, the Police Commander who just returned from leave flagged the NPP, insisting that the NDC had earlier brought its letter on 19th June which he minuted before he proceeded on leave, in which he had asked to hold its programme on the same day.

“Feeling very skeptical about this, we asked to see the NDC’s letter and then after a thorough scrutiny we noticed that it had been dated 19th July by, which time the bye-election would have long been over.”

He emphasized that the NPP is poised to win the election and that no such impediment put in its way will be countenanced.
