Stop the takeover of gov't lands - Rawlings tells Mahama

Ex-President Jerry John Rawlings has made a passionate appeal to President Mahama to block the takeover of government lands opposite the 37 Military Hospital by greedy political figures.

The vast land opposite the nation’s Military hospital has been cleared for development.

But the founder of the ruling NDC government delivering a lecture on corruption in Accra on Wednesday, disclosed that people within government have taken over the land to develop what he described as “their fanciful flats”.

According to ex President Rawlings, the land could be better used to expand the hospital to accommodate the ever-increasing patient population in the country.

Ex President Rawlings therefore appealed to President Mahama, who he praised for blocking the sale of Merchant Bank to intervene and halt the takeover of the land by politicians.

“Across the 37 Military hospital is an old government land that used to have government flats, a lot of these flats have been broken down and they are getting ready to build their fancy flats again.

“The 37 Military hospital needs an extension to be able to take care of the numerous medical cases and I don’t think any of the place would be better than reaching across that street and taking over a government plot and redeveloping it to serve that purpose” former President Rawlings said.

The lecture, organised by the Centre for Freedom and Accuracy was on the topic: Corruption; a threat to Ghana’s democracy and national development.
