Some registered voters could lose their franchise - EC

Some registered voters to whom adverse findings had been found against their registration could lose their right to vote if they do have their queries ratified during the exhibition of the voters register.

Those to be affected include persons whose voters registration were captured by the biometric registration equipment outside the official period that the registration took place at the registration centres.

Such registrations are being regarded by the Electoral Commission (EC), as illegal registrations and had been captured in the invalid voters list, which would be among other documents to be displayed at some of the voters register exhibition centres.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Eastern Regional Electoral Officer, Mr. Eric Mensah-Bonsu, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Koforidua on Wednesday.

He said those whose names appeared on the invalid list and feel that they have a case, could fill an objection form during the exhibition of the register for the case to be held before the District Registration Review Officer, who is the same as the District Magistrate.

Mr. Mensah-Bonsu said those who could prove their innocence would have their names in the final voters register.

He urged all registered voters to visit the voter exhibition centres at their polling stations to verify their names and ensure that, the provisional voters register, contained exactly the same information on their voters identity card.

Mr. Mensah-Bonsu said apart from the provisional voters register, which would be displayed at all the exhibition centres there would also be the multiple registration list and the exception list containing the names of persons who were challenged during the voters registration exercise at some centres.

The deputy regional electoral officer said in all, the region would be having 2,826 exhibition centres to be opened from September 01 to 10.

He said the training of exhibition officers to man the exhibition centres, started from August 29 and would end on August 31 in all the districts in the Region.
