Response to registration exercise in KEEA district encouraging

Elmina (C/R), Mar 24, GNA- Officers engaged for the on-going registration of eligible voters in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) district on Tuesday described the response of residents in the area to the exercise as encouraging.
A total of 4, 955 people had been registered at eight centres at Elmina, Bronyibima and Atabaadze junction, both near Elmina when the exercise took off last Tuesday.
There were no queues at the centres with eligible voters trickling in to have their names written.
At the Akotobinsin Methodist primary centre, at Elmina, 567 have so far registered, 696 at the CPB post office centre, 715 at the CPB Bakaano White house centre, 767, at the CPB Essuekyir centre, and 550 at the Mboakuw hall centre.
CPB Boham's house low cost estate, also at Elmina, has so far registered 292, with 790 and 578 registered at the Bronyibima and Atabaadze junction centres respectively.
No problems were encountered at the eight centres visited, and Mr Mathew Gyesi-Mensah, a deputy registration officer told the GNA that although the turnout was encouraging, some "people do not see the need to register", even though there has been enough publicity about the exercise.
He was hopeful a lot would register when the exercise ends on March 29.
In the Cape Coast municipality, a total of 3,705 eligible voters were registered at eight centres, with the Legion hall 'A' and 'B' centres registering 557 and 515 voters respectively.
Municipal council 'A' and 'B' centres have also registered 396 and 298 voters respectively, the church of Latter Day Saints centre, 264, the Town Hall centre, 558 voters and the Philip Quaque boy's school centre, 620 voters.
At the Castle centre where 496 voters had registered, Madam Matilda Buckman, the registration officer said they have been sitting in the sun for the exercise and renewed an earlier appeal to the Electoral Commission to provide the centre with a canopy.
