President's nominee introduced to TMA

Tema, June 1, GNA - Mr David Annan, the President's nominee for the post of Municipal Chief Executive for the Tema was on Tuesday introduced to the members of Tema Municipal Assembly.

However, the planned agenda for the day to either endorse or disapprove of the nomination could not take place because of last minute postponement.

Mr Abraham Dwumah Odom, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, apologised for the inconvenience caused and gave the assurance that arrangements were underway for the voting to take place as soon as possible.

The Assembly was divided on whether to vet the nominee as contained in the Assembly's Standing Orders or not.

Those who objected to the vetting held the view that previous Municipal Chief Executives were not subjected to vetting and, therefore, the current one needed not to be vetted.

After lengthy deliberations the House by consensus agreed that the election should take place at a later date without the vetting. Some Assembly Members, who spoke to the GNA, said they were not happy about the postponement and called for an early meeting for the programme to take place to ensure smooth administration.

"We came in our numbers today because of the importance we attach to the voting", Mr Agyeman Smith, Assemblyman for Ashale Botwe stated. Other staff of the assembly also stressed the need for a political head for policy direction because without him the Assembly could not implement any policy.
