Parliament has failed MPs – Kpandai MP

Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Mathew Nyindam has accused leadership of Parliament of being ‘selfish’ as they fight for their personal safety and leave the rest of the MPs to their own fate.

According to him, the leadership has done very little to secure security protection for Parliamentarians who are equally important like the Ministers and other government appointees who given protection by the state.

The MP’s comment comes in the wake of the gruesome murder of the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, J.B Danqua Adu Tuesday dawn by assailants who got access to the deceased home using a ladder.

The MP reportedly struggled with the assailants but he was overpowered and stabbed repeatedly leading to his death.

Speaking on Adom FM Tuesday, Hon. Matthew Nyindam stated that the leadership of Parliament much as they have security should equally fight for same for the rest of the MPs.

“Leadership of Parliament over the years has failed Members of Parliament. Gradually when they are done with killing the MPs, they will definitely get back to the Leaders… including the Speaker of Parliament. If you are in Parliament and you see the Speaker coming, you’ll think the work he’s coming to do is different, as if he’s going to a different House, because he has a tight security. I don’t know his house but I know you’ll go through a lot of scrutiny before you’re allowed to enter.”

He added: “Take our leaders, everybody in one way or the other is entitled to protection. If you come to Parliament, don’t we all do the same work, don’t we make the same enemies as the Leaders. If you are a leader what do you do for your subordinates… don’t you protect them? We have said this over and over again. Parliament is leadership. Anyone who has been in Parliament before will tell you that Parliament is all about the Leadership. If the leadership does not make a decision on an issue, the rest of us will talk and talk but nothing will happen at the end of the day. Look J.B is dead, it is finished…those they claim have been picked will come to not. Let us finished with J.B’s funeral and that will be the end of the case.”

Hon. Nyidam urged the leadership to learn from Papa Owusu Ankomah’s experience, who was once a leader and enjoyed all the security but as an ordinary MP now has no such privileges.

“Papa Owusu Ankomah is one person I always cite as an example, what position did he not hold in Parliament, he had all the security he wanted as a Majority leader, but today as an ordinary Member of Parliament he has no security, tomorrow those who are leaders today, when they continue to come to Parliament, some of them will not be leaders, they will join us. When it comes to this issue I don’t blame the state, everyone knows that when the leadership of the Minority and Majority come together with the Speaker and fight for all MPs we’ll get what we want within two weeks.”
