Overcome the apathy towards district level polls

Ghanaians have been urged to overcome the apathy towards district level elections by making sure that capable and competent people were elected to assemblies and unit committees.

Mr. Patrick Asare, an official of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), said they should also resist the temptation to vote based on political party, religious or ethnic considerations.

They should rather be guided by the track record of any candidate who put themselves up for the election.

Mr Asare, a Civic Education Officer at the Asante-Akim South District Office of the NCCE, said the assemblies and unit committees were crucial to the nation’s development and that is why they should give their votes to only committed, dedicated and hardworking people.

He was speaking at a public education forum held at Yawkwei near Juaso as part of an outreach programme launched by the Commission to whip up enthusiasm in the upcoming elections.

It was meant to sensitize the people and assist them to actively participate in the poll.

He spoke of the need to pull together to strengthen the local governance system to make it more responsive to the development needs of the communities.

Mr. Asare said they should also give the necessary support to their elected representatives to implement the development agenda.

Nana Yaa Animwaa, the queen of Yawkwei encouraged women to contest the coming elections to give them a stronger voice in the assemblies and the unit committees.
