National House of Chiefs unhappy with registration violence

The National House of Chiefs has expressed discomfort about the reported incidence of intimidation, harassment and violent clashes at some biometric voter registration centres across the country.

The chiefs said these are needless and unfortunate occurrences which do not augur well for the nation as a model democratic state, and therefore called for the immediate end to all such shameful acts.

Wulugu Naba, Pugansoa Naa Professor John S. Nabila, President of the House, said as custodians of the land and culture of the country, their wish is to see peaceful, free and fair elections devoid of any nasty incidents.

He said this during the opening of the first ordinary meeting of the House for the year in Kumasi, on Friday.

The Wulugu Naba said, peace is a vital ingredient for people’s existence, development and accelerated growth.

It is on account of this that every well meaning Ghanaian should share in the onerous task of working to protect the peace.

He appealed to political parties and their supporters to remain calm and steadfast and do everything to avoid provocative statements, vilification and unhealthy rivalry.

He reminded the media to be wary and circumspect in their reportage adding that they must be objective, precise and tactful so as not to inflame passions.

The Administrator of Stool and Skin Lands, Mrs Christina Esi Bobobee, briefed the chiefs on the establishment of the Customary Land Secretariat, which is part of the phase two of the Land Administration Project (LAP II).

The objective is to help strengthen and consolidate urban and rural land management.

She said her office has intensified public education on the project and called on the chiefs to support the campaign.**
