Nandom District hold forum on government policies and programmes

The Nandom District Assembly in Upper West Region has held a town hall meeting in to explain the status of implementation of government policies and programmes in the neighbourhood.

The meeting jointly organised with the Information Services Department attracted dozens of people from both private and public sectors including traditional rulers, artisans, market women, farmers, political parties, security services, youth groups and assembly members.

The discussion centred on government programme interventions in the areas of agriculture, social protection, health, education, water and sanitation among others.

Mr Aasoglenang Thaddeus Arkun, the Nandom District Chief Executive (DCE), told the gathering that 7500 farmers benefited from the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme in 2017.

Out of the 27,039 bags of fertilizers that were received in the same period, he said, 7,517 bags were disbursed to 2, 725 farmers.

The District further received 26,975 Kilograms of seedlings and disbursed 8,529.5 Kilograms to 651 farmers.

The DCE disclosed that 10 dam sites have been chosen and surveyed for the construction of the ‘One Village One Dam’ project in Tom-Zendaagagn, Tobogru, Betaglu, Bulengagn, Gozir, Sonne, Bezum, Bu, Puffien and Payaan communities.

On health, Mr Arkun said the assembly supported in the immunization exercise, management of meningitis, financing hospital management to research into the high incidence of Hepatitis B infection and other national health activities in the District.

On social protection, he said, nine separate payments were made to 2,916 beneficiaries while GH¢110,750.00 of the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) share of the District Assemblies Common Fund has been disbursed to 484 PWDs.

Mr Arkun said 37 primary schools with 12,309 pupils were currently benefiting from the Ghana School Feeding Programme.

In August 2017, he said, the assembly injected GH¢30,000.00 into the Nandom Town water system to revive it and supply more water to residents.

“Currently four mechanized boreholes have been earmarked for rehabilitation works to start for more water to flow and coverage expanded”, he said.

The Member of Parliament (MP) has also drilled 32 boreholes in communities across the district.

Participants asked several questions covering various sectors of the economy and ways to improve a lot of the society.
