Following the tragic death of Tamale Central MP Dr Murtala Mohammed in a helicopter crash, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has decided to withdraw from the upcoming by-election, a move described by Suhum MP Frank Asiedu Bekoe, also known as Protozoa, as an “act of conscience.”

According to Bekoe, this decision demonstrates “political maturity and wisdom.”

During an appearance on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM’s “Frontline,” Protozoa addressed the NPP’s official statement, which was released on Monday, August 11, 2025.

He emphasised that the party’s action was a display of conscience and wisdom, stating, “It is only a fool that claims that the issue is about my brother and not me. We have demonstrated that we have conscience and we have applied.”

Dismissing claims that the withdrawal was a sign of a potential loss, Protozoa referenced a past by-election to counter the argument.

“In 2000, when Ibn Chambers won with about 61 percent but after stepped down from the Bimbimlla seat in 2022 and headed to ECOWAS, the NPP got a candidate who overturned the record of Ibn Chambers with over 62 percent,” he explained.

He added that “every election has its own dynamics and all politics is local,” therefore, such analyses should not be applied.

The core reason for the NPP’s decision, he stated, was to “not raise the tension of the country” following the tragic circumstances of the late MP’s death."

When asked if the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) should reciprocate this gesture in the Akwatia by-election, Protozoa responded, “I can’t decide for them. I am not a member of the NDC to decide for them. I leave them to their conscience. It is for them to decide. I don’t qualify to tell them what to do. I can talk about the NPP.”
